Self-modulation of Long Particle Bunches in Plasmas at Slac

چکیده
Long (σz ∼ 500 μm) SLAC electron and positron bunches sent into dense plasmas (ne = 0.6 − 2.3 × 10 cm−3) are subject to a transverse two-stream instability called the self-modulation instability or SMI. We use numerical simulations to show that when the SMI saturates, the wakefield excitation reaches the nonlinear regime of the plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA). We show that defocused particles lead to changes in the transverse bunch size downstream from the plasma. Measurement of that size change is an indirect observation of the SMI occurrence. We also show that the initial plasma ramp expected in the experiment does not significantly change the SMI growth or the peak wakefield amplitude.

Electron and Positron Bunch Self-modulation Experiments at Slac-facet∗
We describe some of the measurements that will be performed to study the physics of the self-modulation instability of electron and positron bunches. These measurements will be performed at SLAC-FACET in the E209 experiment. The effect of the SMI on the drive bunch itself (electron or positron) will be studied. Differences between electron and positron bunches are expected since the wakefields ...

The self-modulation of long particle beams in a plasma has recently gained interest in light of the ongoing preparation for the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment of the AWAKE collaboration at CERN. Instrumental to the experiment is the self-modulation of a proton beam to generate bunches short enough for producing high acceleration fields. As electron bunches are easier to handle and the...

In this paper, We investigate numerically the development of self-modulation instability (SMI) with electron bunch parameter available at Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The results show that the long bunch drives wakefields with periods one to one fifth of the bunch length in plasmas with various densities. Both 50 pC and 1 nC electron bunches are inves...
متن کاملSelf-modulation instability of a long proton bunch in plasmas.
An analytical model for the self-modulation instability of a long relativistic proton bunch propagating in uniform plasmas is developed. The self-modulated proton bunch resonantly excites a large amplitude plasma wave (wakefield), which can be used for acceleration of plasma electrons. Analytical expressions for the linear growth rates and the number of exponentiations are given. We use full th...

We briefly describe the physics goals of the AWAKE experiment proposed at CERN. AWAKE is a plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) experiment using the SPS proton bunch as a PWFA driver. These goals include the study of the self-modulation instability of the proton bunch propagating along the plasma, the sampling of the accelerating wakefields by witness electrons, the acceleration of an electron ...
